• Xian The Great Merchant Online - (Re)Introduction of the Old Times

    Gameplay Situation

Finally, I wrote my first post about games! Lols :D
Actually, I always wanted to do it because I'm a gamer enthusiast - But always ended up having a busy day or just rolling on the floor without doing anything ahahaha~

It's good to know that even I have a busy day, I still made this post(s) in no time at all! Lololols

Because this is the first post, it has a couple of introduction words :)
*and I believe it isn't SEO friendly, tho~
Just skip it and search for my other posts if you're here just to find some information about in-game things. No moaning! Lols :p

So, this time I wanna share my view and experience about the best game in my life!
My favorite one, if I can say, although I love to play games in wide genres; something like CoD, dota, ragnarok, granado espada, eldevin, crysis, dragon age, GTA, the sims, COC, and so on.
I always found this game to be the best one :)

It is : The Great Merchant Online ! Or in Indonesia, we call it Xian Online! :)

I can say, it's an old-school game. The Great Merchant or xian online had its first debut in 2003 and it successfully made a huge blast to gamers' heart all over the world in that time, shocking its fellow game ragnarok online who are developed by the company from the same country, drowning the era of counter strike, as well as eliminating a lot of newcomers in no time - and I played it for the first time in the same year when I was in junior high school.

If you never played this game since its "successful year", you might cannot imagine how crowded the mass are. It was worst than a live concert! Lols :p
I used to have a lot of screenshots showing that situation. But unfortunately, my old-broken harddisk sank them all :'(

Well, it was quite colorful years back in that time. Playing with my childhood friends, sharing knowledge or in-game things together, non-stop talking about the game, meet new friends (and even dating with cute girls in real life that I met in the game. Lol), make fun of each other, and the most memorable one is : almost whole players in any game center I played in, they played this game, so you can ask, meet in the game while talking in real life, or even hunt together. It's good to remember today. Such a sweet memory :')

Party with other players. The old-time player is only me :P
(For me, TGM is one of the game who has an epic battle style among the others)

You will never find the same things happen again in today's Indonesian game center. Even the kinds of dota and point blank can't beat it. I can say that there are only 3 games who can almost beat this game in their own peak era. They are: Ragnarok Online (2003-2005), Rising Force Online, and Counter Strike (2001-2003).

Besides of people are playing in their own home, there are also so many variation of the games you can play now. So basically, there is no thing such as "almost-all-players-play-the-same-game" today.

Even today's kids might have a thought like, "what the hell? Are you sure it's a good game? I even can't find it from its graphic."

Yes, the graphic is always been debated today, as if the developer didn't want to bring this game into the new level. Although I personally think that it would be good to see the great merchant online moves to the next level of today's gaming generation, it might be the best for now to stay with the old-style.
The same thing happen with dota. If you declare yourself as a true dota gamer, then you must know the 'ancestor' of it. It's also an old-school game and has the same age as xian online! :)

Btw, some of them are already 'attached' to tgm/xian online after trying it tho~ :P

Well, at least I can show you some snaps of the current situation in the international server :)

    -------

The best thing about this game - and that's why I love it - is that it's not just an ordinary online game with epic battle styles and things like the other MMORPG has, but it also teaches the players about the basic of economy and trading. From trading activity in the market, how auction system works, town-to-town trading (buy low, sell high), running a factory, until the basic of investment and how it gives us a passive income by the time. A really useful game, huh? :)

In a certain time, Indonesian server is more crowded than the international one, by the way. I also love to see how busy the exchange map is (market). I can say it's about 1/8 of the situation back in the old day (while the int'l one is just about 1/2 of the local one). It's nice to see that! :D

The crowd level of both server cannot be judged or compared, however.

You can't judge the international server with a word as bad as a heck quiet server. Because I met so fvcking many people a couple times in some cases - and they headed back to their activities after that, like hunting, trading, spending time with friends, and even their real life activities. They are spreading everywhere so that it looked so quiet again!

You can't judge the local server with a word as bad as they only have a few players. In fact, I met so many people in last Saturday night. The market is quite crowd as well!

Exchange Map at noon of Indonesian server. (I saw the more crowded situation before this one)
Exchange Map at the midnight (real time) of International server. (usually crowded, especially weekend)
In my opinion, there are always some reasons why there is a lot of difference about the crowd of both servers, especially in the exchange area. For international server, it is possibly because of the players are tend to hunt more than trading. The trading activity there is relatively low, mostly because of the items-and-money cycle there has already highly twisted everywhere. Stronger people will have a strong economy power, more or less, sooner or later. Once a lot of people reach that condition, trading activities will greatly reduce. The local one, on the other hand, definitely has a low items-and-money cycle recently, and therefore, many people do a trading. It definitely makes sense, because the local one is still a baby born.

The most common reason of the difference is, many Indonesian players who already played at International server is now playing in the local server. Because it is also a fact that most of the players in the international server is Indonesian.

Speaking of the exchange map or market, maybe only the old-time players could understand how super busy the market was back in the day. We even must race with the other players just to use an empty stand in a market. All the stands were always full. Even worst, some players with 20+ CL point (who can open their own shop without using a stand) even blocked your stand sometimes, showing how fvcking crowd there is. FYI, the stands in the market are orderly placed in a square shape divided into 4-side areas

I might say that this is one the most crowded situation I've ever met in today's TGM/Xian Online (There is a lot of people as well on the right edge of the screen)
Although I also have an account in the local server (Indonesia), I play only in international server - at least for now. It's for future's sake, by the way (LOLs), in case I wanna play it again after I depart to a country where I will study my master's degree. And now, I'm still active, although I can't play it every time, everyday, just like the old-days. :D

One of the reason why I choose to play in the international server rather than the local one, is like in this picture :

She is Chinese and she said she can't speak english (Google translate - admitted by herself! Lols)
Yes, we can make friends with players from various countries. Chat and get acquaintance with foreign players is an interesting thing for me! :)

    -------

Some people might found it funny when they realize that this is an old 2D-graphic-things game and it was re-introduced back in 2009 (international) and even the latest one is in 2015 (Indonesia)!
Many people said, if there are so many new games with an epic, latest graphic technology out there, so why the heck is this game still exist?

Well, they are not a true gamer then - love the game just by its graphic and appearance. Lols
I can assure them that once they understand how epic the gameplay of tgm is, they won't stop playing it! :D

Besides, there are lots of the great merchant/xian online players out there who are still loyal and love this game no matter what - particularly like me, who play this game since more than a decade ago :D
Combining with a good approaching from publisher to get the new players, the game is on!~

The only one that makes me laugh out very loud is that some people think that this game is based on the Korean drama movie called "The Great Merchant". Lols xD

The Great Merchant Kim Man Deok (Kor: 거상 김만덕 / Geosang Kim Man Deok)
And why the heck I put this picture here, anyway? Hahah~

After all, I'm glad that the developer and some publishers have a high dedication to make this lovely game stay alive. I only hope that it lasts long. Very long. Maybe even transforming to a whole new level is okay, as long as not changing the gameplay style (in which will turn out to be failed like the great merchant 2 a couple times ago. You can find it on youtube)

AK Interactive (Seoul-based Developer), Gamania (Japan), Beanfun (Hongkong), and 8ternals (Indonesia). Good luck for you all! Keep this game running as long as you can!
